Our chosen breed is Large Blacks as they originated from this part of the world many years ago. They are docile, friendly, very intelligent and a super- hardy outdoor breed. The black skin prevents them getting sun burn when they bask in their wallows just that little bit too long! The Large Black is Britain’s only all-black pig originating from the Old English Hog established in the 16th and 18th centuries.

PLAYING IN WOODLAND

Large Black sows are renowned as excellent mothers with exceptional milking ability. They are able to rear sizeable litters off simple rations and a placid temperament (coupled with early introduction to a shock or two when touching live tape) ensures they can be constrained behind a single strand of electric fencing.

The characteristics of lop ears covering their eyes, their long body and massive size gives the impression that they don’t move very fast; this however is misleading as they can run like hell, especially when you try to reach their feed trough before they do and get stuck in deep mud carrying a bucket of nuts. Invariably, they get the nuts and you need to get out of there fast and get cleaned up!
